What to Look for When Buying a Bird House

Noah’s Ark Birdhouse

A decorative bird house is a great way to add beauty to any yard or garden.  Most birdhouses work the same way, they provide shelter for the feathered friends you want to have stop by and visit for a while.  Here are a few tips on what to look for when buying a birdhouse.

The first and most obvious thing to consider is a birdhouse that will keep the birds warm and dry. You wouldn’t want to sleep under a leaky roof. Neither do the birds. Look for a birdhouse that uses a solid piece of wood or composite material for a roof. The roof should be sloped to allow rain to run off it without getting into the nesting area.

The next thing to consider is what the birdhouse is made out of. A plastic birdhouse will hold up to the elements much longer than untreated wood. If you are dead set on wood though, look for a water resistant wood such as cedar or teak.

Consider what type of birds you want to invite into a new home. Different birdhouse styles attract different birds. This is mainly determined by what size opening you have for the bird to get into. A smaller hole is better for wrens and blue birds and can help keep out bigger pest birds such as crows.

Finally consider how the birdhouse will be mounted. Will it be free standing, nailed to a tree or hanging from a rope? Look for the appropriate attachment hardware for how you want to set the birdhouse up in your garden.

These are only a few things to consider in what to look for when buying a birdhouse. Whatever you choose you’ll have a great backyard addition that your family and feathered friends will enjoy for years to come.
